Acne Care Treatment – Do You Know How Your Diet Can Cause Acne?

What do you think – is there any relation between your diet and acne? Do you believe that eating lots of greasy food, chocolate and sugar will cause acne? Dermatologists certainly believe otherwise, and have gone on public record with their opinion. If you visit the websites run by dermatological associations, they firmly say that there is no link between diet and acne. Their opinion is mainly based on studies published in the 1980s and 1990s. In general, modern dermatologists (unlike some of the older generation of family GPs) are 100% behind acne care treatment using medication like Accutane and antibiotics.

However, in recent years, newer research has thrown doubts on those old experiments. In 2004, a group of doctors (Parker Magina, Dimity Ponda, Wayne Smithb and Alan Watson) published a study in Oxford Journal on the link between acne and diet. They re-examined the old experiments, and discovered serious flaws. Some experiments used too few patients (only 20 or 30 patients) or were ended too quickly (the experiments ended after 2 weeks when most modern treatments last at least 2 months). Other experiments did not have a proper control group, or used flawed placebos.

Modern studies (by Dr Adebamowo and Dr Spiegelman done in 2004, 2005, 2006) have found a correlation between milk consumption and acne in teenagers. In laymen’s terms, this means that teenagers who drank more milk also had more acne, although they do not really know why.

So what should you do if you have very bad acne? Well, you could listen to your dermatologist and continue to eat lots of greasy food at MacDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken, or you could test it out for yourself. Try eating a plain, healthy diet for 2 months:

  • Only drink plain water or fresh fruit juice. Do not add sugar to your fruit juice. Don’t laugh – this should be common sense, but there are people who still do this.
  • Avoid chocolate.
  • Avoid dairy products. If you need extra calcium, try a supplement.
  • Avoid fried foods. This includes both french fries and potato chips.
  • Avoid fatty/greasy foods. This includes coleslaw and salads with oily dressings. Salads with light olive oil dressings are fine.
  • Avoid spicy foods. In other words, your favorite Indian curry, spicy Thai takeout and Mexican Enchilada are out.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables. No, coleslaw doesn’t count. Neither do rice, wheat, corn, maize or potatoes even though they come from plants.

Unless their doctor recommends a particular diet, eating meals following the good old food pyramid will benefit most people. Many of you will find that your skin condition improves and you won’t need more intense acne care treatment.

Do it Yourself Medifast

I write a lot about my experiences on Medifast. The other day, someone visited my blog and asked if it was possible to replicate Medifast yourself or to come up with some sort of “do it yourself” alternative. I’ll answer this question in the following article.

What You’d Have To Come Up With If You Wanted A DIY Medifast Plan: In order to replicate this diet, you’d be eating six times daily. For five of those times, you would eat small meals that are low in calories and high in protein. Almost every “meal” in this plan runs about 90 -110 calories and is chock full of decent nutrition.

I’ll use the very popular shakes as an example. They contain 90 calories and 10 grams of fat. In addition, they have 11 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. They’re very low in sugar at only 8 grams. And, they’re pretty full of vitamins and minerals too. They contain 20% (or more) of your daily serving requirements for vitamins A, C, D, B6, and B12, just to name a few. And, they contain 30% of the iron you need each day, which is important for women.

Considering that you’re going to be consuming 4 more similar meals per day, you’ll be providing your body with more than what it needs nutritionally, but you’re also getting a low amount of calories and a high amount of protein. This works to put your body in a state called ketosis where not only are you not as hungry, but you’ll also begin to burn your own fat.

So obviously, you’ll want to hit this target with any alternative foods that you come up with. And, you’ll need to find five of these alternatives per day.

Once per day with this diet, you’ll prepare a “lean and green meal,” yourself. This meal should contain lean protein and up to three servings of vegetables. This is not too challenging and this can be accomplished at the grocery store or even at a restaurant, so replicating this is no big deal.

Why A Medifast Alternative Probably Would Not Be Cost Effective: Many people who ask about a DIY alternative do so because they are trying to save money. But, let’s think about this. In order to find foods that are as low in calories and sugar and as high in protein and nutrition, you’re likely going to have to go to a health food store. And, you’re going to need to buy enough so that you can eat these small meals five times per day. You’ll also probably want a bit of variety.

A regular monthly package from the company runs $299, but there are always coupon codes and specials running that can make this even more reasonable. Unless you have a very good relationship with your local health food store and can get the foods at cost, it’s going to be really hard to beat that when you have to buy approximately 145 of these applicable meals.

In short, I suppose with a lot of research and hard work, you could find some comparable foods at specialty stores, but they’d probably be a lot more expensive than what you’d pay to get the real thing.

4.) Lower your consumption of sugar and products made from sugar, such as candies, ice cream, softdrinks, cookies, jams, doughnuts, puddings, chewing gum and the like. Foods with sugar are also acid-forming.

5.) Lessen your consumption of dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, as well as eggs. These are mostly acid-forming foods.

Keep in mind though that an alkaline diet does not mean the absence of acid-forming food. If you have been diagnosed with gastroparesis or functional dyspepsia you know how painful it can be to eat vegetables. Here are two gastroparesis diet tips to help you to safely add more vegetables (and more nutrition) into your gastroparesis diet.

Tip #1 Make Your Own Vegetable Purees

If you have been diagnosed with gastroparesis you might have been advised to eat small amounts of baby food for easily tolerated and digestible nutrition. However, making your own baby food tastes better, and it’s more varied and more nutritious. You can start by investing in a powerful blender, such as the Vitamix blender, to make your own vegetables purees. You also want to invest in a fine mesh strainer and a rubber spatula to strain the purees. It is important to invest in a powerful blender because a powerful blender will make your vegetable purees silky smooth and easier to digest.

Make sure to peel vegetables with fibrous peels such as sweet potatoes. Then just boil or steam (more of the nutrients are preserved with steaming) the vegetables until tender. Let them cool and then blend them in a powerful blender, such as a Vitamix, until creamy and smooth with some of the cooking water to reach the desired consistency. Add more or less of the cooking water according to what you think will be easiest for you to digest. You can use 1 type of vegetable such as well cooked and peeled summer squash, peeled broccoli, peeled carrots, peeled asparagus, de-stemmed mushrooms, peeled sweet potatoes, or a combination of vegetables. Use your discernment to choose which vegetables will be the easiest for you to digest.

Tip 2# Juice Your Vegetables

Investing in a good juicer can help you to get the benefits of consuming raw fruits and vegetables without upsetting your gastroparesis symptoms.

You will still want to invest in a fine mesh strainer to strain your juice to strain out any of the remaining fiber.

Some vegetables that are good to juice are cucumber, celery, carrots, and beets. Wash and peel the vegetables and run them through a juicer. I recommend the Omega 4000 juicer for this purpose. Remember to drink your juice slowly and in small quantities to make sure you are able to tolerate it well.
