The Budwig Diet – A Biography of Dr Johanna Budwig

Dr Johanna Budwig was one of the most important biochemists in Germany who is remembered mostly for her incredible discoveries into the effect that diet can have on a number of serious diseases including cancer. The Budwig Diet, which she created to help to combat and treat cancer in patients, was the culmination of an entire career’s worth of work.

Her work with cancer patients led her to becoming recognised as one of the leading cancer researchers in Europe. Her work was so widely respected that she was even nominated for the Nobel Prize on seven occasions. She spent a large part of her life trying to help cancer patients and those with other terrible illnesses, and she managed to achieve remarkable success with her natural treatment programme.

Before the Budwig Diet

Dr Budwig was born in 1908, and died at the age of 95 following a fall. Before her discoveries into the effect that diet can have on the body, she was a leading biochemist who was widely respected by her peers. She held a PhD in Natural Science, a doctorate in physics and was a qualified pharmacologist and chemist. She was also the chief expert consultant for drugs and fats at the Federal Institute for Fats research.

Dr Budwig was a specialist in the role that fats played in the diet. Although we are now mostly aware of good and bad fats and how important they are, Dr Budwig was making these discoveries a long time before it became accepted knowledge. She even lectured on the importance that essential fatty acids held in the modern diet over 40 years ago.

On top of this, she was a published author. She wrote mainly on her discoveries with fats and the natural cure for cancer, and published such books as ‘The Oil Protein Diet Cookbook’ and ‘Cancer – the Problem and the Solution’ which has been translated into English.

Important Discoveries

It was Dr Budwig’s research surrounding different types of fat that were the trigger for her research into the cure for cancer. Most importantly, Dr Budwig became aware of the potentially serious problems with the modern diet. Namely, that it was composed of a great quantity of over-processed foods that contained high levels of hydrogenated fats. According to Dr Budwig, this and the lack of essential fatty acids in the diet were likely to be one of the major causes of serious illnesses in the developing world.

As a result of this research and discoveries into the presence of fats in the modern diet, Dr Budwig set about researching how these could be affecting cancer patients and sufferers of other serious diseases. She was sure that not only could diet help people to lead more healthy lifestyles, but that it could actively help to treat those people who were suffering from diseases. Now all she had to do was prove her theory.

Key Research

So began Dr Budwig’s research into cancer patients in her attempt to discover what was making them ill and how they could be potentially cured. The majority of her research was made into the blood of the cancer patients. She analysed this because she was sure that it held the secret to her ideas surrounding a potential cure for cancer.

After years of research, she had made a number of important discoveries into the blood of cancer patients and how it differed from that of healthy people. The main findings she made were that the blood of cancer patients lacked the same levels of lipoproteins, phospatides, haemoglobin and Omega 3 as those found in the blood of healthy people.

In addition, she discovered that cancer patients had a strange greenish-yellow substance in their blood that she could not find in the blood of healthy people. She realised that getting rid of this substance was key to the recovery of cancer patients. And it was through the diet of the patients that she was adamant the process could take place, allowing her to reverse the process.

Treatment Begins

Dr Budwig came up with a treatment programme that was based on nothing more than giving patients a diet based on two simple ingredients: flaxseed oil and quark. In combination with these ingredients, patients would also have to follow a strict diet free of many types of unhealthy foods, to get outside in the fresh air and take gentle exercise, and to be exposed to a lot of sunlight.

Flaxseed oil was chosen by Dr Budwig because it contains a very high level of Omega 3, as well as being easily tolerated by the majority of people. Quark, a substance similar to cottage cheese, was chosen for its high levels of sulfurated protein. The two were required in combination in order to help the absorption of the flaxseed oil into the body.

Immediate Results

Almost immediately, improvements were witnessed in her trial patients. After just three months, her patients began to improve in health and strength, and the strange substance in their blood began to disappear at the same time as the nutrients began to rise. Dr Budwig had found her cure for cancer, and set about making the details of the Budwig Diet readily available.

Disagreements

But her protocol was not greeted by everyone. The cancer industry did not accept her results, and the Central Committee for Cancer Research ended up taking her to court over her claims. However, the case was thrown out following the acceptance that her findings were backed up by solid research and results. She stuck to her belief that cancer could indeed be prevented and even cured through diet alone, as long as the strict diet was adhered to.

The Budwig Diet is still not accepted by the medical community as a whole. However, there are many who accept that Dr Budwig made some incredible discoveries throughout her lifetime, and who hope that in time her findings will become more widely accepted so that more people can discover the benefits of her revolutionary diet.

How to Grow a Bigger Butt If You’re Flat

If you’re trying to achieve a curvy figure or a bigger butt, it is likely that you are an ectomorph. Of the three body types, ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph, the ectomorph is the leanest. “Low fat genetics” or “low muscle genetics” are usually associated with this body type.

Muscle genetics

If you have low muscle genetics, it is very easy to overtain your muscles. If you overtrain your muscles, or if you pay no attention to nutrition whatsoever, you might be causing your muscles, and therefore you bum, to get even smaller. This is known as the catabolic state. It’s a state that your body enters during or right after exercise. If your workout takes long enough for your body to run out of energy, you’ll enter the catabolic state and your body will begin to break down muscle tissue in order to make up for this lack of energy. If you’re trying to lose weight, this wouldn’t be much a problem, since you’ll burn a lot of fat in this state as well. However, if your goal is to gain a bigger bum, you wouldn’t want this. After all, we want our bodies to gain weight.

Now, ectomorphs who have trouble gaining weight or trying to achieve a curvy figure don’t necessarily have “actual” low muscle genetics. It’s genetics for a high metabolism, that results in difficultly gaining mass. When you have a high metabolism and you do not eat enough fats (healthy ones), you’re much more likely to constantly be living in a catabolic state where you’re always burning fat and muscle and never achieving any curvy figure. So, we get to the rules.

1. Do NOT work out for longer than 45 minutes.

If you’re only concerned with the bum area, even 25 minutes is plenty.

The reason why you should not do this, is to avoid entering the catabolic state, and to avoid damaging the muscles beyond the point where it can effectively recover within 48 hours (the next workout). Your exercise needs to be short, but heavy. And don’t worry, “heavy” sounds scary, but it’s not nearly as troublesome as it sounds. Just a few intensive sets before you move on with your day.

2. Don’t do exhausting cardio.

Stick to strength training. For the same reason as the above: avoid entering a catabolic state. Running, cycling, all those activities will have you lose weight, and therefore lose butt.

3. Have a nutritious meal ready for right after training.

Do not wait too long to take in carbs (preferably fruits or juices) and sufficient amounts of protein after your workout. Catabolic state ensues when energy runs out. Hence, don’t drain all your energy by working out for too long, and when you finish, replenish as soon as possible!

4. Try not to run out of energy at all: eat plenty of healthy fats and proteins

Eat a lot of good fats, such as avocado, olive oil, coconut. Why fats? Fats take longer to break down, and contain more energy per gram than proteins and carbs do. Taking healthy fats in fair amounts throughout the entire day, provides you with a steady source of energy that prevents you from entering any butt burning catabolic state. So while the fats take care of energy needs for daily activities, the intake of proteins will make sure that your muscle keeps growing.

5. If you’re not an ectomorph

If you’re not an ectomorph, but simply someone with a flat butt, you’re probably a case of “lazy butt syndrome”. What this basically means, is that your neuromuscular system functions in such a way that the glutes are recruited to a lesser extent than they should be during movements where glutes are involved. In this case, even if you squat, you will still not be recruiting enough of the glutes to produce a serious impulse for butt growth.

How can you fix this? (Even if you are an ectomorph, the tips below will still benefit your bum growth results, so by all means follow them.)

1. First of all, make sure you’re only doing exercises that you KNOW to involve glute activity. Such as squats, deadlifts, lunges.

2. When you do these exercises, be absolutely sure to squeeze the glutes at the end of the contraction part of the movement. People without lazy glute syndrome don’t have to focus on doing this consciously, they’re doing it enough already. You on the other hand, have to make up for the fact that your bum isn’t recruited automatically. Therefore: squeeze. The more you do this, the more you will learn to recruit your bum automatically during daily functions as well, improving growth even more.

3. Try to finish the entire movement. You need to go low enough, and you also need to complete the movement when standing back up (usually, this is where you squeeze).

4. After exercise, stretch the lower body, especially the glutes.

8 Tips to Stop Your Dog’s Disobedience

Disobedience occurs when your dog just decides not to listen to something you tell him to do. This is something different than incomprehension. If the dog doesn’t know what you want, it’s not really his fault. But, if he does know and just doesn’t do it, you need to take strides to teach him who is boss.

The only way to really know if your dog is being disobedient is if he has performed the requested task reliably in the past. If he has done it 2 or 3 times he still may not be sure what is going on. If he has been doing well for months, or years, then he is just misbehaving by not doing it now.

Most people just see this as being inconvenient. The reality of the matter is that it is a pretty serious thing for your dog to disobey a direct command. This could end up being dangerous for your dog in certain situations and will also be bad for your relationship with your dog.

The most important part of your relationship with your dog is gaining his respect. You need to be the pack leader, not the dog. Disobedience is, in reality, your dog challenging your alpha status. He is looking you in the eye and saying “Who are you to boss me around?”. This type of passive aggressive behavior will continue to get worse and worse until you do something about it.

I always try to stress the fact that your dog MUST understand that you outrank him in the pack. If he thinks he outranks you you are in big trouble. Good luck getting your boss at work to do something just cause you told him to! Same goes for dogs. You must reinforce your status at the top of the social hierarchy in order to gain dominance.

However this may sound to you, it would sound like Mozart to most dogs. It is actually in your dog’s best interest, psychologically, to have someone else making all his decisions for him. In a pack the alpha always leads the other dogs(or more likely wolves) around, even in their every day behaviors. They also make sure to do little things to gain obedience by establishing their dominance. In a wolf pack all other members must wait until the alpha is done eating the choicest pieces of meat before they begin eating.

Having a solid human/dog relationship hinges heavily on your dog understanding that you are the authority figure. He should be at the bottom of the chain of command in the house. Here are a few tips to help you reestablish dominance and gain your dog’s respect:

  1. First off you should not give the dog free, unrestricted access to the whole house. Make certain places, like beds, couches, or even entire rooms off limits. Remember, its your world and he’s just living in it.
  2. Always be the initiator of play. If your dog brings you his toy, or starts nudging you to play what he really means is “I want to play, and since I am the boss, we’re gonna play now.” Don’t want him thinking that way. When this happens ignore him, maybe go do something else, until he stops trying. Then, if you are ready go ahead and have a little playtime. Playtime is important, but you need to set the rules.
  3. Always make sure you are the first one out of the house or car. In a dog pack the alpha always goes first, since he is the biggest and strongest. If you let your dog first you are acknowledging him as being the bigger and stronger of the two of you. This will start to inflate his ego and make him much more disobedient. By the same token you should always make him wait for his food. Put it on the floor in his bowl and make him stand at you heel. When you have made him sit there for 5 or 10 seconds tell him to “go ahead”, or some such thing. Just like the alpha dog who would make his pack wait until he decides it is time for them to eat.
  4. A great way to make your dog more obedient is to have a basic obedience training program. It can start out at around 10 minutes a day, and trail off to about 5 as your dog becomes more proficient at obeying the commands. Keep the following tips in mind for a good training program:
  5. Always make sure you can reinforce all commands immediately if the dog disobeys. This will probably mean keeping your dog on a leash whenever you are outside the house until he understands the commands, and starts listening.
  6. Use verbal cues properly. When interrupting your dog you should try to avoid using the word “No”. Other sounds will better get your dog’s attention. I use the word “Hey”, although it sounds more like “A” when I say it. This cuts through the dog getting his instant attention. Also make sure to use tone of voice to your advantage. Praise should be in a light cheery tone, with lots of smiling. Corrections should be using as deep and powerful a tone you can use, without yelling.
  7. Never repeat a command. Use a correcting tug on the leash if the dog does not listen. This will remind him that you are still here and still in charge.
  8. Keep training sessions short. Your dog is not as intelligent as you are and cannot keep up the learning process for long periods of time. He will likely start losing interest and paying attention to other things after not much more than 10 minutes. Try to keep sessions between 5 and 15 minutes.

You may also want to try formal obedience classes. This is especially helpful for puppies. While the things you will learn here are helpful they can also be learned, for the most part, from books and other people. The real benefit to this that goes beyond a normal home training program is the socialization factor. Interacting with the other dog’s and their owners is healthy, and will also help you teach your dog to listen to you with the many distractions found in public.

Dangers of Half Rep Training

The half rep is a technique of doing a push or pulling exercise using only partial range of motion for a particular muscle group. While they can be beneficial, most are done for the wrong reasons.

First, to clear up any misinformation, lets go over what exactly a half rep does that is beneficial, and what it is actually used for. These lifts are a training technique used by more advanced lifters to get them past sticking points in their lift, basically, to target areas of weakness in each lift.

Most of the time half reps are done incorrectly simply so that some over egoistic person in the gym can convince themselves that they are lifting more weight than they can actually handle. For example: Have you ever seen someone in the gym load way to much weight on the bench press and then maybe bring the weight down 25% before pushing it back up (usually with a lot of noise to make sure everyone sees them lifting heavy)? They call this a lift but unfortunately this does nothing for the development of chest size or strength. Another example would be this same egoistic person putting hundreds of pounds too much on a squat rack and squatting down only a few inches. This defeats their entire purpose and unfortunately most people, including personal trainers that I see perform these incorrectly and for the wrong reasons.

Over time, performing these lifts incorrectly does two things. First, it decreases the range of motion in which the muscle is viable. Second, the weaker parts of the muscle are not developed, they are left to atrophy and get weaker still. This inevitably leads to injury when a part of the body suddenly finds itself beyond the half rep training motion.

The correct way to do a half rep is to work the hardest part of the movement only, usually the lower part of the movement. (sorry gym rats but going 25% of the way down is pointless) Then stop 1/2 way up and go back down and do another 1/2 rep in the hard part of the movement range. DO NOT BOUNCE THE WEIGHT! Pause at the end of the movement for a split second and then press the weight back up, pausing at the top as well. Using momentum by bouncing the weight is just another way glorify the ego, and does not help in building real strength.

For example: A bench press lift would begin with the bar resting on your chest, go 40%-60% of the way up, pause, and return the bar to your chest. Pause again before performing another rep and do not bounce the bar off your chest. A squat would require you to go all the way into a deep squat, legs bent more than 90 degrees. Move from that position upward until the legs are parallel to the floor, then pause before returning to the bottom. A pull-up can be done in whatever area you are weaker, either from hanging with straight arms up to 40%-60% range of motion, or from half way up to chin above the bar. The idea again is to get you past your weak points.

So the question is; Should I do half reps? I would say no. Focus on developing strength throughout your full range of motion. If you must use them, use the correct technique and use it for the right reasons, to get past a weak point. Do not make it part of your every day lifting and do not use it to add more weight than you can safely handle.

1. Peel the potatoes, and cut into small cubes or slices. Just cook them like you would a regular white potato. Boil them for around 20 minutes, depending on their size, and simply test with a fork to see if they are nice and soft. Drain off the excess water.
